The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin

The Fire Next TimeThe Fire Next Time by James Baldwin
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A must read. I was fascinated by the fact that this letter to his nephew, trying to give him a heads up on life and what to expect in dealing with living in a white American society, was done in the 60s. I see how this must have been read by Ta-Nehisi Coates and turned into a message to his son in the 21st Century. James Baldwin is a magnificent writer and although I had read more than one of his books way back when, I had not read this one. I am glad that my former student pointed this out to me. We all need to do more reading and we all need to be more vigilant in fighting our prejudices, given to us by a very imperfect society that has a long way to go to improve.
